What Simplifying Actually Looks Like for Me This Fall

“Simplify” is one of those words that sounds so peaceful on paper and so overwhelming in practice. You picture the minimalist house, the empty countertops, the capsule wardrobe… and then you look around your actual home and think, well, that’s not happening here.

I want to talk about a different kind of simple. The real kind. The kind that doesn’t require starting over, just letting go of a little at a time. Here’s what I’ve come to believe: simplifying isn’t about owning less stuff or doing less living. It’s about carrying less weight. Fewer things pulling at your attention. Fewer decisions you’re making on autopilot that don’t actually serve you anymore.

Being clear on that matters, because it means simplifying isn’t a one-time purge. It’s an ongoing, gentle edit… the same way you’d tend a garden, not re-build a deck.

What it actually looks like in my life right now? I’m not clearing out my whole house this fall, (although I do that occasionally). Maybe I’ll pick craft closet the that’s been quietly stressing me out since spring, and that’s the project. When it’s done, I might pick another spot. Or I might not, and that’s fine too.

But since this midlife journey has begun and all the changes that come along with it, I’m trying to notice: is there something on my plate… an obligation, a habit, even a mental to-do that I’m carrying out of guilt rather than genuine want? This fall, I’m letting one of those go.

Honestly, this might be the biggest quest yet. I used to think simplifying meant a tidier house. Now I think it mostly means a quieter peace.

I could tell you to go clear out your closets this weekend. Some of you might want to, and if that’s genuinely satisfying for you, go for it. But for most of us, a big all-at-once purge just creates a new kind of overwhelm… a Saturday spent exhausted, three donation bags in the hallway, and no real change to how our daily life actually feels. Although it feels amazing at the time, little by little works better. One drawer. One commitment. One step. That’s simplifying I can actually sustain. For me, it’s definitely a work in progress.

If fall has you eyeing your whole house, your whole schedule, your whole life and thinking “I need to simplify everything”… take a breath. You don’t. You need one drawer. One commitment. One step, with grace.

With love,

Mindy
