I Quit My Job and I Have No Idea What I’m Doing

So I did the thing. I quit my job.

I gave my notice (about 4-5 months ahead of time), finished my last projects, said some genuinely teary goodbyes, and walked out with a box.

And now I’m here, building Bits of Love and Life full time, which sounds very official and put together when I type it like that. In reality it looks like me at my desk most mornings in whatever sweatshirt I slept in, trying to figure out what actually needs to get done today versus what just feels urgent because I’m nervous.

I would love to tell you I have a five year plan. I do not. I have a general direction, which is helping women clear some of the chaos out of their lives the same way I’ve spent years doing it for myself and for other people’s businesses. I have products I’ve built that are almost ready to actually sell instead of just living in a folder on my computer, which already feels like plenty to figure out at once.

Here’s what nobody really tells you about doing this. It is not the confident leap it looks like from the outside. There were a solid few weeks there before I finally left where I would get excited about the future and then immediately panic in the same ten minute span. Both feelings were real. I didn’t pick one and let it win. I just kept doing the next small thing anyway.

I also want to be honest that I did not do this because I had some perfect financial cushion or a guaranteed plan that removes all the risk. I did it because I’d been circling this decision for a long time, and at some point circling it forever started to feel scarier than just doing it. Becoming a Grandma and wanting to be free to be there for my family, that was the final push.

I don’t know exactly how this next year goes. I don’t know which of my products takes off first (if any) or how quickly any of this actually builds into something steady. What I do know is that I’m finally spending my working hours on things that are actually mine, and even on the nervous days, that feels like the right trade.

If you’re circling your own version of this decision right now, whatever it looks like for you, I’m not going to tell you to just go for it, because that’s easy to say and hard to live. I’ll just tell you this. I’m scared and I did it anyway, and so far that’s been enough.

With love,

Mindy
